Claude Shannon, in his Master's thesis, showed
that relay circuits, being switches, resemble the operations of
symbolic logic: two relays in series are and, two relays in parallel
are or, and a circuit which can embody not and or can embody if/then.
Since switches are either on or off, binary mathematics was therefore
possible.
